Challenge
The platform ran on a legacy Ruby on Rails monolith. Every change touched the same codebase and deployment, which limited how fast the platform could grow and ship new features.
What I built
I designed and built a Kotlin/Spring Boot service architecture following CQRS, with Kafka for messaging between services and Elasticsearch for full-text search. Services were deployed with Helm on Kubernetes on GCP, and I rebuilt the frontend with Next.js. The monolith was replaced step by step while the platform stayed live.
Result
The monolith was split into six independent services without downtime. The new architecture handled more than 100,000 requests per month.
Key capabilities
- CQRS services that communicate through Kafka events and can be developed and deployed independently.
- Elasticsearch full-text search across the platform's content.
- Helm-based Kubernetes deployments that allowed a step-by-step migration without downtime.
